Michigan Football: One-On-One With Jim Harbaugh

Michigan scheduled 50-plus satellite camps for the month of June, so it's safe to say Jim Harbaugh is trying to make the movie Around The World In 80 Days a reality -- except he’s doing it all in just 30. After day one of what consisted of a morning camp in Indianapolis, then an evening camp in Springfield (Ohio), TheWolverine.com was able to chat one-on-one with arguably the most talked-about coach in America.

Harbaugh spoke about day one of camping while walking off the field at Springfield High School.

"It's a great day in football," he said. "To be able to connect with this many people in football - youngsters and coaches - it's a good day."

He also found another cause to support. Chad Carr, former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr's grandson, tragically passed away from pediatric cancer last year, and Harbaugh played a big role in the movement of "Chad Tough," the organization set up to not only support Chad, but also to help the fight against pediatric cancer. Although Chad's fight may be over, Harbaugh knows there are other fighters he can support every day, including a Springfield boy named Barrett, whose story is similar to Chad Carr. Like the "Chad Tough" campaign, Barrett's is named "Barrett Strong," and Harbaugh was able to learn more about the young boy.

"I met some friends of Barrett and they told me a story," he said. "We exchanged some things. I gave them my hat and whistle, they gave me the [Barrett Strong] shirt - seemed like a good deal to me."

Harbaugh's recruiting tactics have been praised, but they’ve also been criticized. A recruit told TheWolverine.com last week that Harbaugh told him the Wolverines are "building a monster," and they wanted him to become part of it.

"We're just building," Harbaugh said with a laugh. "Building and fighting at the same time."

With a busy summer ahead, and a highly anticipated fall, Harbaugh has kept the same mindset he’s had since day one on the job.

"I'm looking forward to each day," he said. "We're looking to get better today than we were yesterday, and better tomorrow than we were today."

Harbaugh is currently in Atlanta for yet another satellite camp-filled day. While the trail will be a busy one, he’s enjoying every minute.
