Satellite Camps Ban Overturned

The NCAA's Division I Council ban on football satellite camps has been overturned by the governing body's Division I Board of Directors. Coaches may once again travel to regions other than their own school environment to conduct camps.

Exactly what that means for Michigan, Jim Harbaugh, and his program is not fully clear at this point. Harbaugh lined up a host of camp appearances for the summer, and the ruling opens the door for those to be pursued.

Board members urged the council to take a more comprehensive look at the "FBS recruiting environment," in a longer-term study.

Here is the ruling by the Board of Directors.

“The Board of Directors is interested in a holistic review of the football recruiting environment, and camps are a piece of that puzzle,” Board of Directors chair Harris Pastides, president of the University of South Carolina, said. “We share the Council’s interest in improving the camp environment, and we support the Council’s efforts to create a model that emphasizes the scholastic environment as an appropriate place for recruiting future student-athletes.”

The question for the council will become one of what constitutes a recruiting situation when it comes to camps. Council chairman Jim Phillips, Athletic Director at Northwestern, reacted to the decision.

“It’s clear that the membership has differing views on this subject, and the Council appreciates the Board’s insights into this important issue,” Phillips said. “This review will provide an opportunity to identify the most effective ways prospective student-athletes can have their academic and athletic credentials evaluated by schools across the country."
